SIGN LANGUAGE PROJECT
Deaf children in Tajikistan are widely underserved. Many of them have little to no access to quality educational services. Outside of the World Associates Sign Language Project, families of young children, ages 2-6, in the Sughd Region of Tajikistan have no early intervention sign language programs.
The project employs deaf adult tutors who visit the homes of deaf students, twice weekly for one hour. They teach basic sign vocabulary through creative and play-based methods. Instruction lasts up to two years, or until the family can use 200 signs successfully.
The project also hosted family days and a five-day summer camp to practice skills and provide an immersive environment in which Tajik sign language was the primary language spoken. An annual seminar addressed topics such as disability rights, family relationships, and parenting a special needs child.
